SCIENCE ON A SPHERE® NOW AT A SCIENCE CENTRE IN MALTA
Last week, we completed the installation of Science On a Sphere® at Esplora Interactive Science Centre in Malta (Welcome to Esplora - Esplora Interactive Science Centre Esplora). It is one of the most advanced educational technologies for science communication, enabling visitors to explore the Earth, oceans, atmosphere, and outer space through real scientific data projected onto a large spherical display.
How Does
Science On a Sphere Work?
Science On a Sphere (SOS) is a unique system developed by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Four synchronized projectors display animated scientific data on the surface of a suspended sphere, creating a dynamic model of the Earth or other planets. Visitors can observe weather patterns, ocean currents, climate change, earthquakes, animal migration, and astronomical phenomena in a format that is far more intuitive than traditional maps or flat-screen displays.
The system uses hundreds of datasets provided by NOAA, NASA, and other scientific institutions. As a result, it can present complex natural processes in an engaging way and help visitors better understand the connections between events occurring on Earth and in space.

A New Dimension of Scientific Discovery
Science On a Sphere is among the technologies that successfully combine education with an engaging visitor experience. Instead of presenting static information, it enables visitors to observe real data in motion and within a global context. Visitors can literally watch our planet “in action” and gain a deeper understanding of the phenomena that influence everyday life and the future of humanity.
For science centres and museums, Science On a Sphere is a powerful tool for environmental education and for teaching geography, astronomy, climatology, and oceanography. At the same time, it serves as a striking exhibit feature that naturally attracts the attention of visitors of all ages.
The project in Malta was carried out in cooperation with BWC Visual Technology, a long-standing partner of NOAA. As part of the project, AV MEDIA was responsible for the delivery and implementation of the projection technology, system installation and calibration, and commissioning directly at the science centre.
We are pleased to contribute to projects that make science accessible to the general public through modern and easy-to-understand approaches. We believe this installation will be especially appreciated by visitors to the science centre, offering them an inspiring and unique experience.
NOAA’s Science On a Sphere® can be found in educational institutions, museums, planetariums and public centres around the world.
